From the outside it looks beautiful and Michael Portillo's review was what had lured us to this venue. However, the room was not great with just a bottle of tap water available. We went to the acclaimed spa restaurant for a light lunch to discover they had run out of bread at 3 o' clock on a Bank Holiday weekend - we bought a sandwich at the local petrol station. The restaurant and the food were excellent, the wine extortionate and on reviewing the bill, we were charged for the `complimentary' after dinner coffee. The walks around the grounds were another feature but the land itself was poorly tended and benches were careworn and crumbling. A bit of a let down all round really.
