Very good midweek break and very pleasant hotel except for poor 'welcome'.

We had a three day deal which included an allowance for a dinner and an afternoon tea. It was good value for money. The hotel was in nice grounds and public rooms. With one exception (see below) the helpful staff were excellent especially those serving at the meals. The food at the main dinner and the afternoon tea was very good although there was an lack of vegetables with the main courses. The (smallish) room was clean, well supplied with coffee.tea etc and had an excellent TV; a bathroom hook for dressing gowns would improve things. On the negative side the bar meal my wife had was not so good; very little ham in her ham sandwich and the extra side salad was poor. The worst part was the 'welcome'. There was no smile; no greeting; no explanation of how our deal worked; just a brusque demand to fill in a form. It reminded us of the cheap French hotels we sometimes stayed in when we lived in France 50 years ago. Not a good start at all.
