On arrival, small reception desk staffed with 2 people who were doing other things and we had to ask where we could book in. We were told that they were trying to save a booking online however customers are the most important part of this process and you only get one chance to make a first impression. We opted for the Castle view rooms which were a few minutes walk from the main building. Rooms in the main building were up the stairs and there are plenty of them. No lift. Castle view offer some ground floor rooms. Restaurant excellent and the set gourmet menu was very good. The food was of high quality but the menu was the same for the season. This limits the options of choice and it was difficult to choose something you liked. Too many extra charges for steak, sauce, cheese etc. Is it really that more expensive? Restaurant staff were a close-knit teams and obviously well trained. Free pre dinner drink was offered on request but the serving was 125 cl and accounted for a qtr glass.! Castle view room was quite large but overpacked with furniture and the ceilings were quite low in some parts of the rooms. Step in shower in bath which is awkward to navigate. Bathroom didn't have any hooks for towels etc. Only 1 small bottle of toiletries supplied. TVs were very small and awkward to operate. Free Tour of the castle each morning available at 10.15 and well worth doing. Close to Hexham.
