We ve stayed here several times now, and always had a fantastic time. The rooms are now on the stage of needing a bit of a refresh, but they are still comfortable and characterful - we love sitting in the window seats with a glass of champagne. Pre-dinner bar service is a little slow, but always has been in all the years we ve been going there . Just make sure you get down to the lounge in plenty of time. Service in the restaurant was a little rushed on the first night, but on the second night, we just asked them to slow down and had a very enjoyable evening. Staff are very helpful, and attentive. If you re interested in history, the location is superb. Obviously, you have all the Roman forts, Hadrian wall, and then all along the coast countless castles and superb views. If you re interested in science-fiction - in particular, Doctor Who, then the Museum of Classic Sci-fi in nearby Allendale, is a great diversion for an hour or two. Great time as always and we ll definitely return.
