History of the hotel
Built in 1779 as part of the Prison Reform, Bodmin Jail was a milestone in prison design. With individual cells, segregated male and female areas, and hot water, it began to form the new ideal for prisons throughout England.
For most of its life it was used as a debtor's prison, until 1869 when imprisonment for debt was abolished. From 1887, the Royal Navy occupied an entire wing, and it was also used to house the Crowne Jewels during WWI.
Over the years, 55 executions took place here, for crimes such as murder and burglary, with the last execution taking place in 1909. The jail was finally closed in 1927.
Dogs Policy
The hotel has a selection of doggie-friendly rooms, located on the ground floor within our classic, twin, family and accessible rooms categories. There is a charge of £10 per night to accommodate one and £15 for two of your four-legged friends. Unfortunately, the hotel can only accept dogs up to medium sizes such as Labrador and Retriever.
Please note dogs are not allowed in The Chapel Restaurant.
