This former coaching inn, The Fox and Hounds Country Hotel is a breath of fresh air. Situated on six acres of grounds in the heart of Devon's serene countryside on the banks of the River Taw, you have everything you need to enjoy a peaceful getaway to the South Coast of England. With its history rooted in the 1800s, the building functioned as a coaching inn for the Earl of Portsmouth, then later became a fishing lodge for salmon fishermen due to its close proximity to the river.
The Fox and Hounds Country Hotel was awarded a Traveller's Choice Award in 2023 and 2024 due to its consistently fabulous reviews from guests, making it one of the best dog-friendly hotels in the area. The hotel has a large car park, which is free for guests, as well as an overflow car park.
EV Charging -
While they hope to offer car charging in the near future, the hotel currently only has one standard electric socket for charging electric cars. Commercial charge points can be found at the Tesco Superstores in Crediton and Barnstaple, and of course in Exeter.
Is The Fox and Hounds Country Hotel accessible for disabled guests?
The hotel has 4 ground floor bedrooms, including an accessible room with wet room, that includes a low sink, suitable for wheelchair users, and a shower seat.
Accessible room includes an emergency pull cord connected to the central monitoring system.
Other rooms on the ground floor have different configurations of bath and shower, double and twin beds. Please note that the hotel does not have a lift to the first or second floors.
All public areas of the hotel are located on the ground floor and accessible to anyone using mobility aids including wheelchairs. Ramps are situated near the entrance and anywhere stairs are located. The exception being from the terrace to the rear garden, however, access to the rear garden is available around the side of the hotel.

Children are welcome at The Fox and Hounds.
Standard Double rooms and Superior rooms have space for at least one folding bed or travel cot which can be provided on request.

Does The Fox and Hounds Country Hotel allow dogs?
While in your room, dogs must be calm, and not bark or disturb other guests. Calm dogs may be left in your room for a short time, for example, if you prefer not to bring them to the restaurant. Dogs must not be left alone in your room for prolonged periods and must not left if you are planning to leave the hotel.
Dog bins are dotted around the property as indicated on the map below. Please only use bins marked for dog use, as unmarked bins belong to private residents.
