The setting for this hotel is fantastic. The lovely gardens extend right down to Windermere lake. There is a jetty next door at Brockhole where you can pick up the motor launch to Windermere, Ambleside or Wray castle.
I booked a lake view room which did have a lovely view but the wooden furniture was tired - the dressing table needed a good coat of wood stain and not really in keeping with the room. The en-suite bathroom was very small.
This 2 night break included a dinner allowance equivalent to a 3-course meal in the restaurant, which has 2 rosettes. On our first night we did dine in the restaurant and enjoyed our meal. However, there are only 4 choices of starters and four mains. There was nothing else on the menu that we liked on the second night (same menu each evening), so we ate a bar meal which would have amounted to half the cost of the restaurant meal. Additionally, there are no tables & chairs in the bar area or library that are suitable for eating bar snacks where you are not doubled over to eat. The bar menu cannot be eaten in the restaurant.
We have previously enjoyed stays at the other two hotels in this Group, Brierley Wood & Merewood so really wanted to try Cragwood. Overall, we did enjoy our stay but the only disappointment was the restricted food choices on the restaurant menu.
