This was a surprise trip for my wife's 60th birthday. The overall experience of the stay was good. However, the condition of our room was way below expectation. Decoration was shabby. Plaster work was cracked and/or missing and skirting boards had an inch gap from the wall. Furniture was not antique it was shoddy. The wardrobe door did not fit and chest of drawers had handles missing and broken catches. We were under the impression that the hotel was undergoing renovation so we assumed our room was waiting its turn - hence we did not complain. On seeing other rooms as we left and feedback from other guests it would seem we had the only dilapidated room. I now assume this was a reflection of the fact that I booked a discounted deal. If we return I will book directly and ensure we are not given the Gertie Lawrence room.
