The grounds
There are 18 acres of beautiful lawns and woodlands, and says the setting provides countryside views and a peaceful place to relax.
History of the hotel
Walworth Castlehas a fascinating history stretching back to the medieval period.
12th century: A castle or fortified manor is believed to have stood on the site from around 1150, associated with the Hansard family. The present building is not that original medieval castle.
Late 16th–early 17th century: Thomas Jennison acquired the estate and built the present Tudor-style mansion, largely around 1600, incorporating parts of an earlier structure.
Around 1740: The interior was substantially remodelled, giving the castle some of the elegant Georgian/Palladian and Rococo features that can still be seen today.
19th century: Further alterations were made, including the addition of the north range and the refacing of the west wing in 1864.
Second World War: The castle was used as a military headquarters, while a prisoner-of-war camp was established in the grounds. Around 200 German officers were held there in Nissen huts.
1950s: After the war, it was sold to Durham County Council and used as a special/girls' school.
It was subsequently converted into a hotel; heritage records date its hotel use to the late 20th century. tradition Walworth Castle while travelling to his coronation presented as a tradition rather than firmly established fact.
