The grounds
In 1963 Edward Beale took over a ten acre field previously sublet to a farmer and began an ambitious scheme of tree planting, with professional design and the Arboretum was born.
Since then more trees and shrubs have been added until there are now over 800 different varieties. The arboretum has attracted considerable press publicity and is officially recognised by the Plant Heritage for its Hornbeam and Swamp Cypress national collections.
History of the hotel
The hotel was first bought by the Beale family in 1945 and has remained in the family's ownership ever since.
Until 1924, the house was a family home by various families, including the Cater and Mosely families, who retain old photos of those days. In 1916/17 it was used briefly as a rest home for nurses during the First World War.
Dogs Policy
The hotel has one dog-friendly room. This bedroom has its own private terrace outside, and a gate leading to the exterior of the hotel, and the hotel car park. A maximum of two well behaved dogs will be accepted in the room. Dogs are not permitted in the main house.
