Booked a three night stay at The George in Colchester just before Christmas and were very pleasantly surprised. This large historic building has been refurbished to a very high standard with quality modern, luxurious furniture and fittings that make it very cosy. We were initially shown to a room with only hanging space and a tiny drawer but when I requested one with drawer space (so we could unpack!)we were immediately taken to the Singhnature (sic) suite. It is not a suite but a bedroom with drawers and bathroom. Very comfortable, clean and stylish. Not sure why it would be called a suite but it was lovely and we were glad to be given it. An added bonus is that it s at the back of the hotel which might mean it was quieter. As often happens in hotels, the heavy duvet made it too hot to sleep well but bedlinen was smooth, the huge bed very luxurious and pillows comfortable. Dinner was included in the deal on one night and was delicious. We ate there a second time. The deal offered house wine with a meal if you spent 35 a head but we didn t spend that much without drinks. The hotel is popular with shoppers and locals dropping in for meals and drinks which gives a vibrant feel.Staff are excellent-really efficient, friendly and helpful throughout. The town is full of fascinating historic buildings and the hotel is within walking distance of just about everything-round the corner from the castle for example.
