The Swinton Park Hotel is an opulent, Grade II* castle set in 200 acres of stunning gardens and parkland at the heart of the 20,000-acre
Swinton Estate. Situated close to the market town of Masham, the Swinton Estate showcases the stunning North Yorkshire countryside – extending from the River Ure and across the Nidderdale National Landscape, through to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Owned by the Cunliffe-Lister family since the 1880s, and the ancestral seat of the Earl of Swinton, guests at the hotel enjoy a fabulous, yet informal stately home experience. Swinton Park Hotel is warmed throughout by their own eco-friendly biomass boiler, just part of their commitment to sustainability. They will also plant a tree on the Estate for every stay!

The grounds

Swinton Park Hotel sits amid 200 acres of heritage parkland and
gardens. An 18th Century listed landscape, influenced by the great
landscapes of Capability Brown, the parkland was created by Danby
family during the 1760's. A deer park, five lakes, gardens and follies
were laid out and planted. The gardens are beautiful whatever time of
year, awash with snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells throughout winter
and spring; with summer resplendent with rhododendron and blossom.
Walking routes abound, with maps and suggested routes that take in
Coffin Lake, Dales View, Quarry Gill and Top Lake with its standing
stones and island. The shortest walk, around Coffin Pond, takes about
30 minutes, but to explore the whole area will take several hours!

History of the hotel

The Swinton Estate land title has been in the ownership of the Cunliffe-
Lister family since the 1880s, when Samuel Cunliffe-Lister bought the
estate on retiring from his mill in Bradford, Manningham Mills (which at
the time was the largest factory in Europe).
o The Estate then passed to Samuel's sons and then his grand-daughter
Molly and husband Philip Lloyd-Graeme who took the family name on
inheriting the estate and the family home, Swinton Park. Philip was a
prominent politician who served in 11 Conservative cabinets and was
appointed Earl of Swinton in 1955.
