Atholl Palace Location
Location & Local attractions
Pitlochry in the beautiful region of Perthshire is a hidden gem for travellers wishing to explore the surrounding area and beyond. With the main trunk road (A9) to Inverness and the north skirting the town, and the main rail link passing through it, the town is an ideal stopping off point or base for a truly Scottish Highland break. The pretty town of Pitlochry, multiple winner of Scotland in Bloom and Britain in Bloom awards, is a short stroll from the Hotel. The well kept Victorian main street is filled with small, independent shops with unique merchandise and well worth a browse. The nearby small towns of Aberfeldy and Dunkeld also have unique characters and include small interesting boutiques. Ten miles north is the House of Bruar, a shopping experience often described as 'the Harrods of the North'.
Pitlochry is surrounded by a variety of landscapes, from the magical forest around Loch Faskally, to the heights of Ben y Vrackie, which makes up for its lack of munro status by looking dramatic. The rolling pastures of Perthshire and the flowing rivers Tummel & Tay make for some great photo opportunities.
The Queen's View - said to be Queen Victoria's favourite view, will take your breath away. As the light changes over the shimmering loch and the great mountain 'Schiehallion' in the background, this is a view that is constantly changing.
Whisky connoisseurs will enjoy visiting many of the distilleries in Perthshire and the surrounding area. In particular, there are two local distilleries in Pitlochry, the picturesque Edradour which is the smallest working distillery in Scotland and Blair Athol Distillery. Nearby in Aberfeldy is the "Dewars World of Whisky", and in Crieff, you can enjoy a day at "The Famous Grouse Experience".
Cycling: About 100 yards from the Atholl Palace entrance is where you can hire bikes, tandems, tag-along's and any required equipment. Keen cyclists Kevin and Malcolm will be on hand to provide maps and suggest routes which will suit your abilities.
Walking: Pitlochry has walks to suit every walker, with a choice of pasture or highland, riverside, woodland and open moorland walks.
