History of the hotel

Originally built in the early 17th century as a hunting lodge and trading as an Inn since 1740, the Talbot Hotel has both led and reflected the fashions and enthusiasms of Malton people.

The abiding local passion for horse-racing is ever-present. It's said that the hotel was purchased and enlarged by Thomas Watson-Wentworth Earl of Malton in 1739 in order to provide accommodation 'for the Nimrods who congregated at Malton for hunting, racing and coursing'. To this day, those trades associated with horse-racing make a significant contribution to the life and economy of Malton.

From the early days of the hotel until the start of the First World War, Malton was a well-known spa resort, and people were encouraged, not least by Dr Granville's 'Spas of England', to drink up to four pints of the local saline-chalybeate spring water, 'highly efficacious in many chronic diseases'. The gardens of the Hotel were designed, in part, to provide a place for spa visitors to walk and rest.

Dogs Policy

The Talbot Hotel love dogs and encourage you to bring them with you. Dogs are welcome in some bedrooms and all public areas except the restaurant and Wentworth room - guide dogs only are allowed in these two areas.

To help make their stay as comfortable as yours, we will provide a blanket, bowl and chews. There is a charge of £10.00 per room per stay which covers an extra thorough clean of the room.
