We stayed 3 nights in a ground floor 'apartment'. For an 'apartment' the room was quite small and the 'apartment' area consisted of a small kitchen worktop with a fridge - very useful - a kettle and lots of implements and cooking utensils. The problem was there was no cooker, grill or even a microwave to cook on! No wonder the utensils hadn't been used! There was a fairly uncomfortable sofa and small arm chair and 2 large TVs, one facing the sofa and one facing the bedroom - but only one controller which kept turning on and off the wrong TV!
Our rate included dinner on one night - more of that later.... We also phoned to ensure we could have car parking and was advised that we could - just drive up to the main entrance and the car would be taken from us. However when we arrived we were advised that the car park was facing 'maintenance issues' and we had to park at a discounted rate at a local multi-story. It was a 3 minute walk away. The staff on reception looked after our luggage and delivered it to our room. The deal came with a bottle of prosecco and chocolates. The 'prosecco' was a screw top bottle of nearly fizz and was pretty undrinkable. There were no chocolates and when I asked about the chocolates at reception 1 small bag of 4 single 'after dinner' type chocolates arrived - which you could get for 20p in pick and mix.
Breakfast was another experience. There was no menu, not much fruit to choose and the coffee was self-service from a machine which offered either black coffee - filled to the brim - or cappuccino - no option for a ordinary white coffee (with milk) which I would prefer for breakfast. The scrambled eggs were inedible and there was no advertised option for ordering other eggs - although we discovered on the second morning that we could do that and duly ordered poached eggs.
On the third morning the hotel 'ran out of bacon' - and, after complaining to the poor waitress who was doing her best, I was advised to report to reception who kindly agreed to waive my parking fee. I have to say that the staff, both on reception and in the restaurant in the mornings, were great. However the staff in the evening were not so great. We waited 50 minutes for our starter on a quiet Wednesday evening. The staff didn't seem to notice and when eventually I asked where our starter was, I was advised that the kitchen had forgotten about it and it duly arrived 5 minutes later. The food wasn't bad - when it finally arrived.
When we checked out we were given a card to get us out of the car park free of charge - except that the card we were given tried to charge us 24. I had to walk back to the hotel and get the hotel to phone the car park attendant to let us out which made us late for an appointment we had.
Having said all that, the hotel wasn't actually bad. It is in a good location and the bedroom, although smaller than I anticipated, was comfortable and the bathroom was great with a drench shower. The kitchenette remains a mystery! We actually had a great time and laughed about the oddities of the restaurant and kitchenette but were frustrated by the car park issue and fairly cross about the prosecco/chocolates. If it wasn't for the reception/breakfast staff, the location and quality of the bedroom/bathroom, I would have given this a 2 star, but the hotel really needs to get a grip of the little things that can spoil a stay if it is to be a 4* hotel. Oh and one final tip - great Italian restaurant at Trattoria 51, 10 minutes walk away. Room Tip: Avoid ground floor rooms
